Shadows from Ceylon

Sri Lanka, 2018

Since the eighties the island tore itself apart.

Coming from Ceylon, there were different visions for Sri Lanka. The fighting went on for three decades. The scars are still there, but not all to see. They still burn the rice fields as they used to. They weave on the old looms. The roti is the same. And the tea.

Surely I missed what is missing. But the absence itself is clear. a thirty-year civil war casts a long shadow. You can still see Ceylon in the negative space.
